The following is the real-life
story of Barbara, a DIEP Flap patient.
When I tested positive for the BRCA-1 gene mutation, I faced some
of the most difficult decisions a woman can make. I had lost my grandmother
(who I never knew), my Aunt, and was now losing my mother to this
terrible disease. I was not surprised by my positive test but I was
still devastated. Every mammogram, sonogram and MRI was loaded with
anxiety for me and my family. It wasn't so much IF they would find
something, it was when.
In the end, I faced the terrible choice of having a prophylactic
mastectomy to save my life. I reviewed all the choices for reconstruction
and was very unhappy with all the options. I didn't want implants
and the idea of losing both my abdominal muscles for a TRAM Flap
seemed extreme. Then I started reading about DIEP. To be able to
recreate my breasts with my own tissue and without ANY loss of abdominal
strength was an amazing option for me.
As you know, finding a surgeon experienced with DIEP is a difficult
thing to do. It took a lot of work to find you but I am so glad
I kept looking.
Every experience with you and your office - Tasha and Kim in particular,
was excellent. I had no worries about insurance, scheduling or any
of the other pre-op planning that is usually so stressful. And,
your constant attention while I was recovering from the surgery
was above and beyond any I have experienced from any of my other
surgeons or physicians.
Most importantly, I wanted to let you know how pleased I am with
my results (even before Stage II).
Thank you so much for your dedication and support and for giving
women like me such a great option.
Sincerely,
Barbara
